The Black Student Union has a brand new sponsor for this semester. Many students participating in this club are eager to work with the FACS teacher, Elizabeth Laley, in bringing the club together as a whole.

Senior Ta’Yonna Crossland, president of BSU, expressed interest in finding a new sponsor for BSU. As a result, Dr. Ted Happel worked with the students in finding a good fit for the job, and asked for volunteers amongst the staff. Laley soon stepped up to the role.

“Ms. Laley’s awesome because I know she’s extremely organized, and she’s also very good at getting the kids and the students involved,” Dr. Happel said.

Before Laley took over as sponsor, many students active in BSU were frustrated with the lack of opportunities to participate in club events. A few students asked Laley if she could take over as club sponsor, which Laley kindly offered to do.

“I was really happy that she stepped up and gave us a chance; she’s been really helpful,” Crossland said.

Currently, BSU is working on making and putting up posters for Black History Month. Though there hasn’t been too many meetings with Laley yet, the members of BSU are hopeful for the changes that will take place with Laley on board.

“I don’t really feel like we’ve had enough time to really meet. We’ve met a few times with their leadership team and I feel like we’re gonna hit the ground running,” Laley said.
