With graduation sneaking up, seniors were offered the opportunity to speak at graduation. Kylee Mize was chosen to speak at graduation.
“Honestly it was Mrs. O’Keefe’s idea … but I’ve always been told I’m a good writer and feel like I have a bunch to say, so I thought I would give it a try,” Mize said.
Seniors who accepted the opportunity had to speak in front of a panel of teachers.
“The process is that I submit a google form and students can sign up if they’re interested in speaking or performing at graduation. Once they’re signed up, I give them a little bit of direction on how long it should be and content. We have a day after school where everybody comes in and presents their speech,” Counselor Sarah Scaturro said.
There were around seven students willing to audition this year, which gave judges a hard time deciding on who should speak.
“[I was looking for] definitely something that spoke to more people in the graduating class. Something that resonated with the speaker and the students listening to it,” teacher Tori Ramsey said.
Teachers were excited about the diversity of speakers auditioning.
“I enjoy allowing auditions to happen because I think it gives people a chance that we don’t hear from all the time,” Scaturro said.
