It’s that time of year again where families across the country are coming together to give thanks for each other, and the common necessities that are granted to them in everyday life. It’s also that time of year where St. Charles High and St. Charles West work together to support fellow community members by gifting non-perishables to those in need.
In the past few years, StuCo has been able to give thousands of canned foods to families in need. This year, the drive has started a bit later than normal, which has caused a slight ripple in the plans to raise enough canned food.
“I’m hoping that as we finish out this week and into next week we will be able to kind of step it up, and get the amount that we’re looking for,” StuCo adviser Skye Reichert said.
Though the canned food drive hasn’t been as successful as previous years, there has still been drop offs from both the students and staff around the school. The promotion of this food drive has helped tremendously as class officers discussed the details during AIP, promoted on social media, counted the cans turned in, and set up signs around the school to inform students about the drive.
“I feel like we’re having a lot of engagement from each class, and we’re very competitive when it comes to winning against West,” sophomore class president Carter Crumble said.
Not only is the canned food drive about giving back to the community, it’s also a race to donate more canned foods than West by Turkey Tip-Off. In addition, the class that donates the most non-perishables will receive a donut party in the morning as a reward.
“I’m hoping that the incentive for the grade level winner is gonna help people participate, and want to participate in the future,” junior executive secretary Ethan Cox said.
As of recent, the canned food drive donations are coming in close with seniors taking the lead, and SCHS winning overall. The final counts were made on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
Freshmen – 37
Sophomores – 43
Juniors – 51
Seniors – 225
Total:
SCHS – 534
SCW – 673
Though it is a competition, these final counts will help immensely as the overall goal is to help the community. SCHS is donating to the St. Louis area foodbank this year, while St. Charles West is donating to the school district’s food pantries for families in need. Both are noble causes, and are a great aid to those less fortunate.
