A new state title has been added to St. Charles High school’s history. Esports is earning recognition of their first-place state title with a banner that will be hung in the rafters of the gym.
Though the banner will be hung up eventually, the process of it is extremely long. The banners themselves took about a month to produce. It was presented during Senior Night on Feb. 20th. Following the production will be the Central Office hiring a lift to bring up a banner. Though this is new to everybody, it is also new to Activities Director Ben Owens.
“In my time here, yes, this is the first one I’ve won since being here,” Owens said.
With the process of the banner still fresh in the team’s mind, many are still in awe at the fact that they won a state title. The team practiced all season, kept cool under pressure, dealt with issues, and learned to fail during this time. All of that eventually went into them earning their names on the banner forever.
“It’s still a little surreal to me that we’re gonna have a banner hung, not just outside the gym but in the gym, and I get to look at it and be like ‘huh that’s permanent,’” esports coach and chemistry teacher Alex Messina said.
With the SCHS team taking on a number-one team, losing was a possibility. With their ability to push forward and work with what they had during the season, the team came out on top.
“Winning the banner felt just about as good as winning state, because knowing that now my name’s gonna be in the school forever,” junior Moe James said.
