After a long seven years, the Pirates have finally beat the rival Warriors in a varsity baseball game. After losing to them the day before 6-5, the team came back and won 8-0against St. Charles West. Starting the game out, the Pirates scored seven runs in the first inning, which immediately boosted the team and got them going for the game.

“It meant the world to me. I promised Bichel before the season that we would get him his first West win and it was one of my greatest accomplishments to be able to get that for him,” catcher Nick Besancenez said.

Pitcher Matthew Robertson was no doubt the player of the game in his team’s mind and on the stats sheet.

“I feel like my coaches did a good job of leaving me alone to do my work throughout the game,” Robertson said.

Robertson struck out nine batters this game, and didn’t let up a single run to end in a seven inning shutout. Before the game, alumni coach, Charlie Meeker, was recognized to congratulate him on being a great leader, person, and coach as well as honor him on being inducted into the St. Charles High School Hall of Fame this past fall.

“I thought the boys were just really excited and focused from the start for this game. It was a night game with a big crowd with us honoring Coach Meeker before the game,” Head Coach Brad Bichel said “The boys knew we had a chance the day before to beat West and felt that we let that opportunity slip away so they came mentally prepared to win the game.”
