FCCLA will be traveling to Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo., on March 15-17 to take part in FCCLA’s State competition.
FCCLA stands for family, career, and community leaders of America. The club members primarily do community outreach and charity drives when they’re not competing. This year FCCLA ran a turkey drive for no holiday hunger and did coffee Fridays almost every Friday to raise money for FCCLA funding. Daniele Munzer and Elizabeth Laley are the FCCLA sponsors. Munzer has been the sponsor since 2012 while Laley has been working with her for the last seven years.
“It has been fun getting to work with Ms. Laley and get to see the fun projects and volunteering, community service, and fundraising activities the students plan and participate in,” said Munzer.
Munzer and Laley took five students to the competition, with all who competed gaining some sort of placement.
Lilith Ellison- Public Policy Advocate Level 2– SILVER
Kenneth Minon & Kierra Skillington- Sports Nutrition Level 3- SILVER
AuBrianna Strong from SCW- Bronze
Shavon Kyem– did not compete, but went to different workshops
Freshman Lilith Ellison is competing in the Public Policy Advocate category. She researched and created a presentation on Forced Labor, which she will be giving at the competition.
Freshman Lilith Ellison was the only one out of her club that got to find out she made the top five on Monday night. Saturday she competed and presented her project to the judges where they asked her questions about her research and method when creating her presentation. Tuesday morning she got up extra early to go and walk across the stage.
“I’m hoping next year I can maybe go to nationals,” said Ellison.
Junior Kenneth Minion and senior Kierra Skillington will also make the trip to Springfield to compete in the Sports Nutrition category. The pair got second place at Districts, which allowed them to qualify for State. They worked on a sports nutrition plan for former student Taylor Partney. This plan allowed for Taylor to meet new personal records for her XC running. Partney started at a 26 minute personal record; Skillington and Minion made the goal for this nutrition plan to decrease it by at least a minute.
“Kierra and Taylor actually tested this out,” Minion said. Skillington and Partney followed the plan together throughout the building of the nutrition project; exercising and eating what was planned out to lead to their desired Personal record times.
