This year, four St. Charles High athletes, senior Elijah Case, senior William House, sophomore Lily Black, and freshman Meredith Case, went on to the Missouri State Cross Country Championship on Nov. 7. For three of them, State wasn’t just about competing, it was about seeing months and years of hard work finally pay off.
The State Cross Country Championship was held at Gans Greek, in Columbia, Missouri. Gans Creek is used by the Mizzou Cross Country Program, and is famous for its preferable terrain.
Black showed her enthusiasm for the course, having been there in the past.
“I’m so excited, Gans Creek is my favorite course to run on,” Black said. “Last year, I got a PR on that course, and it’s so fun because it feels so fast.”
Prior to the championship, Meredith explained that the meet can be competitive as it is enjoyable.
“[The Championship is] a fun time for those who aren’t trying to win, and for those who are trying to win, it’s very competitive,” said Meredith, expressing clear hopes to win while still being able to enjoy the meet itself.
Elijah was adamant about being successful at this meet, explaining his commitment to winning.
“I am really focused on making sure that I am able to finish strong… this is my last year, and I want to do well at state.”
At the championship, all four athletes delivered remarkable performances. In the class 4, district 3 race: Elijah Case placed 3rd overall with a time of 15:48.7, cementing his place among Missouri’s top runners, and William House placed 39th with a time of 16:54.3. On the girls’ side, Lily Black finished 73rd (21:13.2) and Meredith Case placed 92nd (21:40.8), strong results that reflect their effort and growth throughout the season.
