Boys tennis wins Mexico tournament

The boys tennis team at SCHS finished first place in the Mexico tennis tournament on April 3.

“For the Mexico tournament we took part in, there were two pools. Each pool had four teams. So you played each team in your pool, so we played the other three teams and beat them all so we were 3-0 that’s why we went to the finals,” Coach Jonathan Flaxbart said.

The tournament followed under the team’s high hopes of anticipating a victory.

“I always believed we would win whatever tournament we played this year. Our Top six is super solid, and one of the best I’ve seen in my four years of playing,” senior Israel Cervantes said.

Not only did winning a tournament offer a great experience, so did the events that surrounded it.

“It was an amazing experience, the ride to Mexico’s courts, the downtime between matches, and the thrill of winning first and celebrating after with Pizza Hut was one of the best experiences I’ve ever felt,” Cervantes said.

This achievement wasn’t sudden, as the boys had worked hard and put their effort into tennis.

“The main thing that has helped myself and the team to be successful this year is the immense effort all our guys put in over the off-season and it has really paid off. We have the first winning record in years and have been playing extremely well. Also another huge help has been our coach, Mr. Flaxbart. He has really helped us get better and is a great coach,” senior Aidan Hatfield said.

Flaxbart is proud of his players’ progress.

“[My favorite part about coaching is] honestly just seeing the slow growth. I know they want it to happen overnight, but I keep pointing out to records from last season or even from the first match of the season to this one. Well yeah you still lost, but remember when you were losing 0-8 and now you’re losing 5-8? You can’t tell me that’s not getting better,” Coach Flaxbart said.
