With the spring sports season off with a bang, some students have chosen to do more than one sport. This is a big weight on their shoulders, balancing double the sports on top of academics.

A couple of freshmen this year have decided to test out the waters by doing track and field plus their main sport, but the schedule is far from perfect. Daily practices overlap, along with games and meets, causing these athletes to choose a priority. Sam House, a freshman, runs track along with playing baseball.

“I focus on baseball because I’m better at that than track, so I favor that more, but anytime there is a track meet I’ll do that over a practice,” House said.

Not only are these athletes doing two sports, they are also juggling their academics on top of the practices and competitions. Freshman Davita Gingras is a member of the varsity soccer team and is running track.

“You don’t have a lot of time during the day and after practice, you just have chores and you just have to go to bed,” Gingras said.

Finding time during the day to complete homework has proved to be a struggle. “I especially use AIP,” she stated.

Going from one sport to the next after a day at school is not an easy task. Ava Rosener is a freshman who has chosen to run track on top of doing club volleyball.

“The hardest part of balancing both sports is going from one to the other and just always go, go, going,” Rosener said.

So far in the season, the benefits have been outweighing the stress.

“It’s a lot, but it’s fun,” House stated.

The running and jumping aspect of track has helped these athletes a lot.

“Even though I’m missing track, I’m still getting conditioning in soccer,” Gingras pointed out.

Participating in high jump has helped Rosener for volleyball.

“The stuff I do in track carries over so much, especially in high jump the momentum and the steps are the same as volleyball,” she said.

Overall, the experience has been a rewarding one.

“It’s fun to make new friends with upperclassmen on the soccer team,” Gingras said. “[Doing both sports,] you can get a little bit of both experiences,” she added.

Running track comes with a big benefit, endorphins.

“It is very hard, but it’s worth it because running has made me a happier person and I feel like it puts me in a better mood,” Rosener said.
