When it came time to choose their FBLA project, Isabelle Eaton and Caitlyn Buchholtz knew exactly what they wanted to do. The non-profit Youth In Need has impacted both their lives every since they started working with them two years ago.
Youth in Need has a mobile street outreach program which is where they will be donating the pillows and blankets created for their project. The goal for their project was to create as many blankets and small pillows as they could. They wanted to help as many people as possible, while still making it useful and easy to carry around the pillows. They set out to make small pillows. So they teamed up with fashion teacher Elizabeth Laley and Fashion 2 students to create them.
“We wanted to make pillows small enough so that when people have to carry a lot of stuff around they don’t also have to carry a giant pillow around so we made 60 pillows and 15 blankets,” Buchholtz said.
Buchholtz and Eaton are close friends and teammates, so working together comes easy. Their hard work, leadership, and ability to listen and work together helped them succeed and get so many people on board to help with the project.
“I think we agree on a lot of things which makes it easy to collaborate with each other because it’s like ‘oh what do you think about this’ and the others like ‘oh perfect,’” said Buchholtz.
They were happy with the outcome of pillows and blankets and were proud to do a good thing and be able to help people through their project. Laley was also glad to be able to help people and be a part of the project.
“Helping people in need is a vital part of the community and giving back to others, and the fact that I was able to help students who were trying to run something that gave back to the entire community, in my class, was a good thing to do,” Laley said.
