Update: Due to low ticket sales at both schools, the Winter Dance has been cancelled.
Despite the decades-long rivalry between the two schools, St. Charles High and St. Charles West will soon be putting their differences aside for a joint winter formal. The dance is being organized by both student councils working together. Last year, both St. Charles High and St. Charles West struggled to fund their dances, with West having to cancel.
“They only sold a handful of tickets, and had to cancel their dance, we barely made it past our minimum threshold and almost had to cancel the dance”, Student Council Sponsor Skye Richert said.
By combining the dances, StuCo hopes to be able to avoid future cancellations.
“So part of it is in hopes that we can be able to sell enough tickets to be able to actually have an event for students, and part of it is that we want to be able to try and build better bonds and community with the other high school in our district, and so by having the combined dance we’re hoping that that will help that happen,” Said student council sponsor Skye Reichert.
While Reichert sponsors the event, the planning itself falls into the hands of the students on student council.
“We’ve been working with their dance committee, and our dance committee, and I feel like we’ve had a lot of really good ideas that we’re excited to execute,” said StuCo’s Executive Public Relations Officer Monica Ferguson. “There’s been a slight challenge because this is the first time that we’ve done this and I think communication could be better to a certain extent, but I think we’ve all like, still done really well, like, with this being our first time planning it.”
This is the first time both councils have collaborated.
“Our advisor has been so helpful… communicating with their advisor, just because like, it’s been a little hard communicating.” Student Council Executive Vice President Lana Usery added. “Mrs. Reichert is a key part.”
The dance will take place in St. Charles High’s aux gym on Feb. 21. The theme is Snow on the Beach.
