The season may have started off rough, but the varsity girls basketball team has overcome hardships and are now maintaining a winning record with big things ahead. The girls pushed through and won the Duchesne Tournament consolation championship in December, and came back Jan. 31 to win yet another consolation championship in Hillsboro. Their success this season is due to Coach Blake French believing in the team and being the best coach she can be.
“We are definitely improving every day and really starting to find our identity. We’ve had a couple of injuries from players that really make an impact, but we’ve fought through that adversity and keep growing stronger” French said.
Team captains, senior Renata Restrepo and junior Grace Basler, have had quite the year between helping their team grow as well as growing themselves. Basler is currently averaging around 14 points a game, making her the team’s leading scorer this season. Restrepo is also averaging 6.7 points per game currently.
“I think we are talking well together and are playing well together as a team unified,” Basler said.
This season the team has looked up to one another and showed what the definition of a team is like. Although they have already been doing great things, they still have a big season ahead of them and are working hard to play their best going forward and into Districts.
“I hope for the rest of the year that as a team, we can work better together and try to win more games and just score better,” Restrepo said.
They currently have a winning record of 11-8 after their big win over Winfield High School on Feb. 2.
