The new Community Club at SCHS came up with the idea of a community garden. They want to create a space that anyone can enjoy no matter their feelings, opinions, race, ethnicity, orientation, or stances. This garden will be placed outside A building, near the business hallway entrance.
“The overarching goal is to create a stronger sense of community, not just at St. Charles High school, but within the St. Charles community,” club sponsor Jessica Ross said. “Our vision is to help people maneuver through life in a more positive direction, and not alone.”
Ross says the big push for this community garden was the recent death of one of our students. She expresses that students are struggling; there is a lot of built up energy and anger that students don’t know where to place. She hopes this garden will help with that. To do so, the Community Club needs help from the SCHS students.
“We are relying a lot on donations…new club, no funding,” club member Lillian Spencer said.
With a donation of rocks, Ross brought paints from home and the club is beginning to paint them for decorations. They still need more help to fund the garden beds and tools.
“We will be opening up my classroom on Thursday afternoons for people to come and paint rocks. A dollar a rock, or whatever you can give, we will never turn somebody away,” Ross said.
Club member Claire Coble says that they separated into groups, her group in charge of figuring out decorations. Spencer will be doing a lot of planting she says, it is something she is good at and likes to do. She says there are only five of them. They hope more people will join to help build the community garden.
