Austin Forney has recently joined the staff for the 2024-20245 school year and is happy to be here. Last year, he co-taught at Hardin Middle School and this will be his first year with his own classroom. Before he was with us, he studied at St. Charles Community College for two years and did another two at University of Hawaii at Hilo. Forney loves baseball and has been spending time helping out with the team.
“What really made me realize I wanted to be a teacher was coaching baseball. Seeing… the lightbulb go on for some kids in baseball… I finally put two and two together,” Forney said.
Coaching baseball really helped him figure out what he wanted to do with his life. It helped him realize that when he was coaching, he was really teaching. He realized that is the same thing as if he was in school. He has always been good with numbers, and therefore decided to teach math. So far, Algebra has been his favorite subject to teach.
“I like the sense of community. Everyone is just, I feel, real close like staff, teachers, there’s a lot of… connections made with students.”
These connections are important to Forney and he feels that they can carry over and help a lot. He also enjoys helping students understand what they are learning in class.
“Seeing them when the light bulb goes on is a really cool feeling so I wanted to chase that.”
