In the world of art, it’s always wise to take inspiration from the masters. This is the advice that SCHS Prom Committee took when they decided to make the Van Gogh masterpiece “Starry Night” the theme of this year’s prom. But before the Prom Committee could land on this decorative decision, they had a vote consisting of other possible themes for this year’s prom.

“We had five or six different themes for them to choose from, and they voted and it [Starry Night] was the winner,” Prom Committee sponsor Elizabeth Laley said.

The other possible themes for this year’s prom included wildly different possibilities, such as ‘Hollywood’, ‘Enchanted Forest’, or ‘Evening in Paris’. Despite all the choices, the Prom Committee felt very sure and positively in their decision.

“I was pretty excited about the theme, I wanted to do something that wasn’t basic this year, and I think it was still easy to do,” Prom Committee member senior Ellie Gibbs said.

Despite the venue being beautifully adorned with Starry Night related decorations, the Prom Committee, along with the prom’s guests, felt that it was too small for SCHS.

“It’s kind of out of the way, and they do a good job on service, but I’m happy that next year’s location is changing to give us a little more room to spread out,” prom attending teacher Stephanie Albert said.

Due to the venue arrangements having to be scheduled two years in advance, SCHS came to the decision to change the venue last year.

“That’s a financial decision and a space decision that was already decided by adults last year, and for everything else it will still be student planned [next year],” Laley said.

For the student members of the Prom Committee, the venue of next year is a mystery.

“I have no idea what next year’s venue is, but hopefully the dance floor is bigger and there will be more air conditioning,” Gibbs said.

This year’s prom brought wonder and joy, despite the worries for next year’s venue.

“I thought it was well attended, and the dresses were beautiful this year. I loved the change from super short to elegant and long,” Albert said.

The stylish dresses and suits worn by happy students seemed to form a masterpiece of their own, dancing underneath the glimmering lights above. Maybe the Prom Committee next year will take another artistic avenue and opt for a Monet or Da Vinci themed prom, but until then, SCHS will wait in excitement for the new venue and new ideas.
