James Eddy has been teaching Spanish at St. Charles High School for three years, and this year he began teaching an Algebra Lab class. This lab class is a support in addition to an Algebra class for extra practice on problems. This is Eddy’s third year at St. Charles High School, and his tenth year in the district.
“This is the first time I’ve had a math class in my career. I’ve been teaching all this for 20 years,” said Mr. Eddy.
Eddy remarked how the Lab class didn’t have a set curriculum so they have more room to play games and use alternative teaching.
“I really like sometimes we get to do games with Mr. Eddy, I also like that it is a good chance to improve my math skills and get my math grade up,” said freshman Camila Carbonell.
Eddy became certified in Math first, and then added the Spanish certification. Having both certifications allows him to work with students who need more help with the English language. Eddy teaches the classes in both English and Spanish to encourage the students to participate.
“I have seen many benefits with Mr. Eddy having an Algebra 1 lab,” said math Teacher Melissa Kohr. “He has our students that are Native Spanish speakers, so Mr. Eddy has been able to reword things in a way that makes sense to them that most of the other teachers cannot do. He has greatly helped out students with translating key vocabulary in Algebra 1.”
