Junior Gillian Phillips has been on the St. Charles High Cheerleading team for about two years now, since the Winter season of her Freshman year. Gillian did gymnastics for 15 years (since she could walk) which helped bring in a lot of skill and practice to the team.
“I try to find a spot to highlight those skills in every routine. Although SCHS has a very talented cheer team we seem to fall short on skills that Gillian has so she is always given an opportunity to shine,” said Varsity coach Britny Goldsmith
With her background Gillian brought her flexibility, her ability to pick up any choreography given to her, and her determination. Gillian is a Tumbler or a Flyer for the team. She would like to continue this at the College level.
“You can just put her into anything and she’s always ready to go, she always knows what she’s doing,” said Varsity Cheerleader Orion Schaub.
There are many values that the Cheer team tries to instill, The biggest being accountability.
“Cheer is not just a uniform it’s work, sweat, being sore from practice and not giving up,” said Goldsmith.
They also work to maintain a family-like dynamic that helps to pull the team together.
“I love that it gives me opportunities to meet new people from all grades, and that it makes high school a better experience knowing that I have a family to rely on,” said Phillips.
