On Friday, Feb. 1, the swim team participated in the 2022 GAC’s at the Rec Plex, along with many other schools within and outside of the district. Everyone throughout the season had been dropping times left and right, with many individuals and relay teams qualifying for medals.

“I would not say I was surprised, but in more awe of how awesome everyone has been this season. Dropping time throughout the season is hard and is a testament to how hard everyone works,” head coach Lisa Graham said.

Two events at GAC’s were incredibly close to medaling. Senior Abby Lassanske’s 200 yard freestyle was fifth in her heat, with only a couple seconds off from winning a fourth place medal. Another close race was the 4×100 yard freestyle relay swam by seniors Sarah Frerker and Abby Lassanske, junior Emma Gilkison, and freshman Joey Jackson.

“Two swimmers decided to forgo their events to be well rested for the event,” Graham said. “The times that this team made both individually, and as a team was outstanding. The team dropped four seconds from [their] lifetime best.”

The girls this season showed incredible determination during GAC’s. Dropping times, especially at the end of the season, is nothing short of impressive.

“Swimming is just as much a mind game as it is a skill game,” Graham said. “You have to have it in your mind that you are going to [compete], because you are the only person pushing [you] once you are in that single lane.”
