After only graduating one wrestler, the girls varsity wrestling team is looking for even more successes for this coming season. The team is full of many athletic and hard-working athletes who are ready for this season. All of the girls that had qualified for State last year are back. They are all looking forward to another season and are excited to see how it will go.
Captain girls varsity wrestler Cecile Puati is ready for this season. After placing fifth at State last year, she is expecting herself to place higher than she did. She prepared in the off season by going to camp and going to off-season practices. She started wrestling because Syria Bell, junior wrestler, got her to wrestle with her. She was actually going to cheer, but after a few weeks of wrestling it kind of stuck. This will be her third year wrestling and after a few weeks of practice it has been looking promising and she is very excited for this season.
Sophomore varsity wrestler Shavon Kyem is prepared for her second season. She is more than excited for this wrestling season and cannot wait to spend time with her team and just have fun. The reason she went to wrestling was because her friend Kayla said she should come with her. She was actually going to go to basketball, but after she went Coach Dill would not let her quit. Last year was her first year wrestling and she surprised herself by making it to State. She was very nervous about going and she was kind of in her head too much about it, but this year she’s more ready.
Coach Kevin Dill and many other coaches are running a tight program. His coaching style is to help his athletes understand why they do the stuff they do and that they do it for success at the end of the year. They set high expectations and expect them to meet them. He wants them all to succeed not just in the wrestling world, but also academically. He expects them to be good role models and good representations of themselves and the school. Their big culture thing is to hold each other accountable on and off the mat. There are 22 girls wrestling this season. To recruit girls to wrestle he pretty much asks anyone and anybody and tries to persuade them to wrestle. He wants them to understand the benefits of wrestling and how it can help them. He is very proud of the girls that went to State last year and wants them to go back and accomplish more.
“The expectation is for them to qualify again, had a couple on the brink of placing last year, Cecile placing higher then she did last year, Syria and Shavon getting on top of the podium, they all have the capability to achieve high success this year, if they put the work in that will happen,” Dill said
