This fall, girls tennis has now started playing to the potential they’ve had all season. In the last match against the FZE Lions, they had their biggest win yet. Three doubles matches were won, 4 single matches were won, leading the Pirates to a 7-2 win. In the games, there were many tie breaks that the girls were able to win, securing a better record for this year than last year.
“We’re making a lot of progress from last year, for sure. It’s been pretty good, “ said sophomore Izzy Eaton.
A lot of the progress this year can be credited to the work the girls put in over the summer. Many of the girls on the team were trying to get together to work on bonding and increase their skills.
“A bunch of my friends and people on the team practiced two times a week [over the summer]” said sophomore Matalyn Basler.
Coach Jonathan Flaxbart is extremely proud of the fight that they’ve gained for this season. Even a majority of their games lost have been going to deuce and the girls have
forced the opposing teams to work for their wins.
“We’re going out and we’re competing against juniors and seniors, and majority of my team is sophomores,” said Flaxbart.
The one complaint from the coach is that many of the tennis players joined late in the season this year. Tennis’ season is significantly shorter than the rest of the fall sports, only being about two months. The girls and boys tennis teams are looking for players for the boys 24-25 season and the girls 25-26 season. Many of the teams gain great friendships and have a lot of fun throughout the season.
“It’s been great. We have a really close team. We’re all just friends and work really well together,” said Basler.
