This fall, the varsity team’s new coach, Blake French, will be replacing Ben Owens as the head coach. French is currently a 6th grade teacher at Jefferson Intermediate School here in St. Charles, Missouri.

“It has always been a goal of mine to be a head varsity basketball coach. After I found out Coach Owens got the Athletic Director position…” said French.

French has some past experience coaching basketball teams at other high schools and here at SCHS, but this will be her first time being the head coach over a team.

I was the C team coach at Fort. Zumwalt South for two years, then I was the varsity assistant at South for two years. Finally, I was the varsity assistant coach at St. Charles High School for two years,” said French.

Since Owens decided to become the schools Athletics Director, he can no longer coach the girls basketball team.

“…I got the new activities director job where Mr. Hahn is retiring so I applied for that position and that’s the position I’m going to do next year and in that position you cannot coach,” said Ben Owens.

The girls seem to be excited about the new varsity coach coming in. French was already the assistant coach while Owens was still coaching and the girls seem to like her as a coach.

“I really love her as a coach since she was our assistant before and I’m open minded to how this next season will go,” said sophomore Lorelei Oetting.

Overall, since Hahn is retiring, Owens becomes the new Athletics Director next year which then gives Blake the opportunity to take his role as head coach. The girls may have a bright future ahead of them next year and years to come.
