This year, Amy Walker has taken the position of a full time Special Education teacher. She is looking to engage her students virtually and physically the best she can while trying to adjust to her new position and responsibilities.

Starting out as a music teacher in the St. Charles District, Walker got her original degree in vocal music. After resigning from that position, she became a paraprofessional here at SCHS a couple years later.

“I’ve always felt the need to be a teacher,” she explained as to why she came back to teaching. She worked here for five and a half years before moving to another state for a few years, then eventually coming back for a total of seven and a half years.

 “I always seem to get drawn back to this school district,” Walker said. She also came back because she had a lot of friends here and she had kids in this district. She felt a lot of emotions when she found out she got the Special Education job.

“Exciting and scary at the same time,” Walker said, “you begin to feel the weight on your shoulders.”

 Walker feels that there are many differences between her old position and her new one because now she is in charge of the whole class rather than just helping out. She explained that now she has to do all the paperwork regarding Individualized Education Plans (IEP), which adds a whole new level to her workload as a teacher.

 She has many hobbies and interests outside of the classroom.

“I like to do things that are quiet.” 

Walker likes to read and take walks with her husband of 32 years. She’s also very artistic as she likes to paint, quilt, and cross stitch. 

“I think I’m working in one of the best places around.”
