New special education teacher, Rachel Schmidt, has come from KIPP St. Louis High School, a charter school in downtown St. Louis. She worked there for three years before she came to St. Charles High to work with the kids who need a little extra help.

“I teach a modified English 3, modified College Career Readiness course for ninth and tenth graders, and then a Writing Lab to give some kiddos that need some extra time to give them extra support,’’ Schmidt said.

Her love for the kids is what drives her to work everyday. Teaching the kids is what makes her happy and fulfilled in life.

Coaching also is a big part of her life, especially before she had her daughter. She has played sports her whole life.

“I played soccer my entire life including in college at Truman State,” Schmidt said. “I also played basketball, ran cross country, and in my free time loved playing tennis and volleyball. And at my previous school, I coached basketball and soccer.

Sports are a part of her, even when she went to college at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri. Her coaching career had to be put on hold because of her daughter. Someday, Schmidt would love to get back into coaching soccer.

“Before I coached, but because of my daughter, who is a toddler, I haven’t been able to get back into coaching. One of these days, I would love to coach soccer again,” Schmidt said.

Schmidt’s love for the kids that she teaches goes both on the field and off the field.
