On Friday, Aug. 22 Student Council kicked off the school year with their annual back to school assembly. Students gathered in the gym during AIP for an hour of games and performances. This year’s STUCO executive board put a lot of work into preparing for the assembly.
Student Council put a lot of forethought into the assembly. Executive President Daniel Waters shared, “Mostly it was script writing, planning games and things, discussing with admin about some logistical things, planning how to project slides, that sort of thing,”
The assembly began with performances from both the cheer and dance teams. Shortly after, Student Council introduced their new executive board for the year and the new class officers. After this, selected students took part in some assembly games such as the well-known head, shoulders, knees, cup, and a grade-level scavenger hunt around the gym. Students who won each game won prizes of free game passes and $5 Galley gift cards.
The back to school assembly featured many new aspects that have not been included in past assemblies; one being the slides that were projected in the gym, which showed what was happening in each moment. Another change in this year’s assembly was the speakers going unscripted.
“During the assembly speaking, we’ve made the decision to go off-script this year so that it’s more genuine, authentic, and alive because you don’t want to be read to,” Waters said.
There was one overwhelming question that was raised after the assembly had finished, though: What happened to class chants? Why were they removed?
“Class chants are really fun when they are done properly, but some of the student body decided to get out of hand on multiple occasions. We would love to bring them back, but students need to act more safely.” Said Executive Vice President Lana Usery.
It’s not just the students who have complicated feelings towards the removal of class chants. “I have mixed feelings on that, just because from an advisor perspective, because it’s a little bit rough on the people doing class chants. We have lost pieces from our mics, we’ve had things get broken, have people get knocked over, it’s kind of like a mob mentality thing.” Said Executive board director, Mrs. Reichert.
Executive secretary Ethan Cox shared, “I think it was a good idea to start off. I mean, yes, it’s good to have the freshmen know what class chants are because it’s fun, but last year there were a lot of injuries, including myself,”
The assembly finished off with a reveal of this year’s Homecoming theme: Mamma Mia! (Here we hoco Again). After the reveal, students left the gym and returned to class.
“I think everything for the most part went really well,” Mrs. Reichert shared.
