Frights, sights, and… bricks? That’s right, the Lewis and Clark brick and stone masonry class has constructed a terrifying Haunted House right in their own shop, making use of dark hallways, harrowing costumes, and some power tools. They spent Halloween scaring the pants off of every other class at Lewis and Clark.
For the last 11 years, brick and stone instructor Joshua Blattner has been putting up a haunted house with the help of his students. In fact it was the students that started this tradition in the first place. Originally they wanted to try and build a house, but they happened to finish on Halloween so they thought, why not make it a haunted house? And 11 years later they’re still keeping it going.
“The students started the haunted house because they just wanted to build a house inside the shop in 2013 so then we built the house and we got it done on Halloween and some of the kids said ‘Let’s scare people’ so I said ‘What the heck”’ said Blattner. Speaking of the students, all of them got the chance to scare the poop out of everyone, one of those kids being Austin Naucke. Austin got two roles in this year’s haunted house. First he got to jump out of a barrel and freak out his fellow students. His second role was to jump out from behind a truck with a chainsaw and chase away those who had just finished the house.
“I was the barrel guy first, then I became the chainsaw guy,” Naucke said.
Another student junior Caleb Vaughn got to participate in the house, dressing up and jumping out at strangers. Caleb was one of many students who worked together to make their house truly haunted, combining showmanship with construction to create a tension-riddled shop of terror.
