This is the second year of the St. Charles High School chess team led by Patrick Gebhard. Every Tuesday after school, they strive to improve their competence as a team and work hard in competitions against other schools.
Monica Ferguson, junior, is compelled to understand more information about the strategic ways of the game. Chess challenges the brain in multiple ways such as developing pattern recognition, making decisions both visually and analytically and memorization.
“The chess club at SCHS is really fun because you get to learn with your classmates. This is my first year in the club and it has helped me improve my chess skills through practice,” Ferguson said. “The winter tournaments are going to be a great chance for us to challenge ourselves against other schools.”
Because of how competitive chess can be, everyone involved has to work together as a group.
“Chess club is super fun and a pretty laid-back, nice club,” said sophomore Myra Soles. “The upcoming winter tournaments will be the second seasons we have completed and I’m looking forward to it. I think that we have a pretty food shot at winning a few matches this year. I think it’s a great opportunity.”
