The football team was finally able to shine their true selves and break their seven year curse of losing the first home game of the season. Breaking through the defense against Westminster the final score was 28-25. Their all-time record against Westminster is 3-0, beating them back in 2011 and 2010. Not only did they beat Westminster in the first game, but have followed up with two more wins: Francis Howell North and St. Charles West. The win over SCW was the Pirates first in 19 years, marking a huge accomplishment for the team.
“We just wanted to prove to everybody that you know this team we’ve been through a lot and we’re ready to give you our best. That’s what we did week one,” said Wide Receiver and Defensive Back Ezequiel Lopez. “It just shows that we were mentally preparing like we were the show that night.”
Head Coach Daniel McMullen and seniors alike are excited with their recent victories. They now look forward to the future games. They plan on honing their skills on and off the field to help better their team and themselves.
“I don’t want to sound cocky, but I have no doubt in my mind, I could probably go out there, block their defense and give them enough time in the pocket to plan a family vacation,” said senior Offensive Lineman Ryan Kissell.
So far this season, Quarterback Jordan Rowe is leading overall with 11 touchdowns, 67 completed passes, and 756 rushing yards. With this accomplishment, Rowe is also leading his team to victory after victory.
“It feels good,” said Rowe. “Just knowing that I’m a role model for them, helping them get better. I’ve also been on this team for four years so getting to work with them to help prepare them for next year is nice.”
McMullen believes wins and losses shouldn’t hold people back from focusing on their bigger goals.
“I’d like to say this to our players, yesterday’s win or loss shouldn’t be on our minds. We must look forward and drive to what’s going on today. This will help us as a whole,” said McMullen.
Players and staff alike hope to keep their strong bond with one another and secure their selfless goal to help one another shine even in their darkest of moments.
