As students start a new school year, Activities Director Ben Owens is bringing back an old tradition of having an SCHS Hall of Fame.
“It was kind of discontinued from the year 2006 and when I got the job, I knew that was something that I wanted to start again to kind of recognize our wonderful student athletes and coaches that have gone through St. Charles High School,” said Owens.
Owens made a committee of 15 former coaches and alumni that then helped choose the inductees. To be an option to go into the Hall of Fame, inductees have to be graduated within the last five years and would have to be nominated by someone on the committee. For the next Hall of Fame induction, which will be 2026, the nominations will be open to the public. Owens reached out to other schools for help.
“Very daunting, very strenuous task, getting information from other schools and their AD and knowing their process and how they do it. Taking pieces from the ones that I liked and making one of our own,” said Owens.
One of the 12 people that was inducted into the SCHS Hall of Fame was Casey Teson. Teson was a phenomenal basketball player. He was known most for his incredible shooting ability and the way he could get to the basket. In 2015 he led the SCHS basketball team to a State Championship. He was a 2-time All-State selection, 4-time All-Conference selection, and was the Missouri Basketball Player of the Year in Class 4. He also holds the SCHS record for scoring (1897 points), free throw percentage and 3 pointers (227). He then went to Eastern Illinois and Maryville University. Now he owns Casey Teson Basketball Academy.
“It’s an honor to be in the Hall of Fame with all these other amazing athletes. I’m glad that all of our hard work is getting recognized,” said Teson.
Another one of the 12 inductees is Julie Williams. She was one of the best all-around athletes in SCHS history. She was an extraordinary three-sport athlete, who played volleyball, basketball and track and field. For volleyball she was the Missouri Gatorade Player of the Year in 1996, 2-time All-State, third in Missouri history in attacks per set and went to the University of Iowa to continue playing. For basketball she holds multiple SCHS records: she is third in scoring (1763 points), fourth in rebounds (801), and was All-Metro. Lastly for Track and Field, she was a three-time State Qualifier and held the discus record for 20 years.
“It is an honor to be recognized in the Hall of Fame,” said Williams. “There have been many amazing athletes and coaches throughout the history of the school so to be recognized is humbling and a great honor.”
Her dad, Jim Williams, is also being inducted. He was the Head Football Coach in 1982 when the Pirates won their only State football championship.
“It feels even more special being inducted with my Dad,” Williams said.
Along with them, the other nine people being inducted into the Hall of Fame are Gene Bartow, DeWayne Bond, Boo Champagne, Josh Harrellson, Autumn Looney, Cherice Mack, Craig Maxwell, Dennis Tankersly, and Gary Wacker. All of these amazing athletes and coaches were recognized on Saturday, Oct. 12.
